Local and mail-order services didn’t appeal to me because I didn’t want the knives out of my hands or tested on stuff I wouldn’t cut in my kitchen. So I went looking for sharpeners I could use in the home. - As I read opinions, the whetstone seems to be the best possible way. The electrical sharpeners are about the only alternative that actually re-create an edge, so I thought if the best of them doesn’t satisfy me I’ll have to go with a whetstone. And I bought this machine. - As one reviewer pointed out on a slightly different model, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you think you’ll simply get an edge by running the blades through the six grooves in order, you will be sorely disappointed. - The first and second pairs of grooves are for different knives and the third works with the first, maybe the second too. And that’s not all. - You have to run the knife, test for a good burr on the new edge, and polish the edge straight to get your razor sharpness. - Don’t forget to wash the knives, before and after the sharpening. Yes, but under some conditions. I tried this with five knives: Four Henckels five-star blades, and one some-other brand blade. On one Henckels santoku, I made do with a minimum burr and got a sharp blade, but it wasn’t razor sharp. This will be done over. The other brand blade got a nice burr and everything, but never got razor sharp, though it was sharper than it had ever been. The three other Henckels knives, they are as close to razor sharp as anything. - What do I consider razor sharp? I ran an edge across a small part of my arm and it took off all the hair. THIS IS NOT SAFE – I have shaved with a straight razor so I didn’t cut myself. DON’T DO THIS, read on: I used the same blade to cut a slice off a vine ripened ripe tomato without using a chopping board, and established this test: The slice comes off with no skin left on the end of the slice where the knife finishes the cut. That is razor sharp. Vine-ripened, ripe tomatoes tend to have a skin that is almost like plastic wrap – thin and very resilient to the sharpest blade. - None of my newly bought knives were able to pass the hand-held ripe tomato or hair-on-arm test when they were new. So the sharpness is better than the factory blade.

The VitaMix 5200 has been a wonderful addition to our family

I went for years wishing that I had one in my home kitchen. When I finally decided to spring for one, I choose the VitaMix 5200. I called VitaMix and spoke with one of the customer service representatives. She told me the only difference between the VitaMix and the VitaPrep was the warranty. The VitaMix (home use) was 7 years and the VitaPrep (commercial use) was 3 years. It makes sense given the type of use that the device will see in a professional kitchen. The home version has not disappointed. It is as sturdy as its’ big brother, the VitaPrep. I also purchased the dry container, too. The almond butter is a delight. Be sure to carefully roast your almonds on a low temperature. Take them off before you think they are ready. They will continue to cook and tend to burn easily. The VitaMix 5200 has been a wonderful addition to our family. Everyone is eating more fruits and vegetables. Some people prefer the Blendtec device. I prefer the VitaMix. The Blendtec has preprogrammed buttons. The VitaMix is entirely manual. It is very simple and in my opinion is less likely to experience trouble in the long run. Nobody likes to spend money needlessly. Be assured that this product is worth the extra money. It is a great design, well manufactured and a good value for your food dollar. Better to save up for this than to spend your money on the Health Master. I just purchased a second VitaMix for a family member. Now that is a high recommendation.

I am so impressed with how much juice the Hurom juicer is able to extract and how little pulp left over. So far I’ve used it every day, and sometimes more than once a day. I’ve juiced kale, collard greens, cucumbers, basil, ginger, carrots and their tops, apples, kiwis, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, spinach, apricots, oranges, grapefruit, bell peppers, sweet potato, celery, cherries, blueberries, apples, parsley, and lemons. The only one that I’ve ever had to use the reverse button on is the carrots, so I try to cut them in very small pieces – about the size of a pea. Clean up is easy. It’s quiet so I can use it while my husband is still asleep! Plus it looks good. I was looking for a juicer that would provide a great tasting juice with less waste, and would clean up easily. The new Hurom 100 stainless steel does all that! The juice stays blended with several fruits or vegetables blended together, does leafy greens very well, and is a snap to clean up. I’m totally pleased.
